YouTube is ready to delegate the right to sell more ads to more video authors.

In January, Tom Leung, director of product management for YouTube, announced the plan. Specifically, this plan will allow video authors to independently select the advertising content inserted in front of the video content, and even sell ads directly to brands to negotiate their own prices.

At present, almost all YouTube ads are uniformly distributed by a set of algorithmic systems. This system will automatically recognize the interaction between video content and viewers, and then distribute the ads without human intervention. Compared to it, allowing video authors to choose their own advertising content is a more “intensive cultivation” approach.

Self-selected advertising

In fact, as early as 10 years ago, YouTube started an attempt to “let authors sell their own ads.”

At that time, YouTube’s video advertising business was only launched, and the entire ad distribution system was very immature. So for those media organizations that already have advertising sales experience, such as NBC TV, YouTube launched a business called “partner-sold ads.” These mature media companies that have produced and distributed content on multiple platforms can directly port their advertising partnerships to YouTube.

Compared with algorithm-distributed ads, “self-operated” ads have three main advantages.

The first point is more precise audience matching. The algorithm mechanism may be able to recognize that the audience of a sports review channel is mainly adult men, and then push car advertisements to these viewers, but its understanding of users is still difficult to compare with the content creator himself. For example, bloggers on digital channels will know more about whether their fans are mainly iPhone or Samsung fans, they can make more matching choices when advertising, and advertisers often get better advertising results.

The second point is a more flexible bargaining mechanism. With better advertising results, advertisers will naturally be willing to invest more in advertising budget. YouTube ’s advertising system has a self-contained cost settlement method, but in general it is centered around CPM (average impact cost). YouTube ’s average CPM rate is currently around $ 18 per thousand ad views, which is not a high price for many top creators. If creators can reach more precise cooperation with advertisers, this price will increase exponentially.

The third point is to avoid market risks. YouTube does not allow all video content to access the advertising system. One of the important reasons is that a few extreme, controversial content may bring negative effects to advertisers. For example, in 2018, YouTube’s advertising system broke out and put more than 300 companies’ ads in front of some white extremism, conspiracy theories, and even suspected pedophile-related topics.

YouTube has since strengthened related ad review, but the related risks still cannot be completely circumvented by the algorithm system. Moreover, some content channels in question are not “unqualified to advertise”, but their content is different from the demands of most mainstream advertisers. If they are allowed to sell their own advertising, they may still find suitable advertising cooperation. For example, some guns or political content that is legal in the United States.

All in all, creators ’“ self-employed ”advertising is more like a“ intensive farming ”operation method, which is more detailed, more precise, lower risk, and can bring greater benefits.

So why did YouTube wait 10 years before starting to promote this approach?

Higher thresholds, more complex mechanisms

The biggest problem is the threshold.

Although YouTube ’s advertising distribution system puts forward a series of requirements for content, only channels with broadcast volume and subscriptions that meet certain criteria, and the content does not involve some extremely controversial topics, can apply to access the advertising system and earn revenue. But the truth is, this system has already made most of the video content on YouTube, including a large number of independent video creators.

These creators do not have the ability to sell ads themselves, and can only rely on YouTube’s advertising system to earn revenue. This approach may seem a bit “rough,” but it does give most creators the possibility to make money from videos.

But as YouTube grows and users grow, this is changing.

Many “Personal Channels” of that year have grown to tens of millions of subscriptions, attracting even more viewers than TV stations. For example, YouTuber PewDiePie, the most popular game on YouTube, has 103 million followers. Many of these people have registered their own companies or joined other media alliance companies to operate their YouTube channels in a more professional manner.

In fact, even if YouTube does n’t delegate the right to sell ads to video authors, they have already started their own “ad sales”. Most of the well-known YouTubers have tried to add some of their own business cooperation to the video, some of which will be inserted in the video content in the form of hard and wide, while others appear in the form of product, equipment sponsorship, prize sponsorship, etc.

For YouTube, the problem is becoming more and more complicated, because the business cooperation that creators talk about is embedded in the video content, and YouTube can not get a penny. The more mature this type of business cooperation mechanism, the stronger the media alliance of creators, the more hidden dangers YouTube will have for its own advertising business.

For the ads distributed by the algorithm system, the ratio of YouTube to creators is 45:55. With this 45%, YouTube has grown into one of the most profitable media platforms in the world. Google has just announced the results of YouTube’s business for the first time. In 2019, YouTube’s advertising sales revenue reached 15.15 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 10% of Alphabet’s total revenue.

YouTube must make its advertising system more flexible, meet the growing needs of creators and advertisers, and ensure that it can continue to be the “dominant” of the game.

I read this wonderful article on what we need in a new next gen social network by Jonathan Saragossi. And I thought I would share it with readers of my blog.

Facebook might be saying that its user base is increasing but the truth is that the innovators and early adopters are fleeing or leaving it in big numbers. Reason human mind wants something new always.
As more services are entering the market and trying to get attention of users, people are finding out that their needs cannot be fulfilled by a single social network ; they need multiple social networks and communication channels. Taking my example I use Facebook, Google+, Twitter,LinkedIn, Blogger, Pinterest , Youtube, Vimeo, etc. Our tastes and hunger for new are making us choose different channels for our social networking needs. The result is fragmentation in the channels of service.
It is all natural, in the life cycle of product to slowly lose its charm or  unless it somehow becomes a living organism with its own reproductive system and evolution, one will eventually wither and die. Facebook cannot evade this process – it regenerates with nuances, but is not reinventing itself.

Lets look at Diffusion of Innovation chart by Everett M. Rogers

Early adopters as shown in the Rogers’ bell curve

Jonathan says this curve is missing something important – the two-way migration that happens over time. When the late majority joins in, the innovators and early adopters are already feeling uncomfortable.

Hence he says the conclusion is undeniable; a new social network is needed. These are the things that will make it awesome and sustainable:

  • The multiple expressive me
  • Mobile first
  • Localized recommendations
  • Ownership
  • Income and commerce
  • Tool-set for hackers
  • The future
Want the read it in details, about the above pointers head to Jonathan’s post thenextweb.com  Facebook is for grandparents

AddingWindows Live Writer to Windows

If you don’t already have Windows Writer installed on your computer, you need to add it. First, how-
ever, click Start ➪ All Programs ➪ Windows Live and make sure you don’t see Windows Live Writer
in the menu. If you do see it, Writer is already installed and you can skip to the next section to start
learning how to use it.
To add Writer, open Internet Explorer and browse to home.live.com. Log in with your Windows
Live account. (If you don’t already have one, you can easily sign up for one right from the login page.)
Then, in the Windows Live Web site, click More ➪ Downloads. In the Blogging section, click Writer
to open the download page.
Click the Download button, and when the File Download dialog box appears, click Run. If User
Account Control displays a security warning, click Yes to allow the Windows Live Setup program to
run. In the Windows Live installer, click the button beside Writer. You can also choose
to download other Windows Live add-ons at this time, or run the installer again later to add other
add-ons. If the installer shows that Writer is already installed, as shown in Figure 17-3, you don’t
need to install it again. You can certainly add any other Windows Live programs that are not yet
installed, however.

Setting Up Your Blog Account

After you have installed Writer or ascertained that you already have it, you need to configure at least
one blog account. The following section explains how.
Adding a blog account
Writer automatically should run a configuration wizard the first time you start the program. If you
need to start the wizard yourself, choose Blogs ➪ Add Blog Account to start the Windows Live Writer
Wizard.
If you already have a blog, in the first page of the wizard choose the type of service where it is hosted:
1) Windows Live Spaces: Choose this option if your blog is already set up on Windows Live.
2) SharePoint blog: Choose this option if your blog is set up on a Microsoft Office SharePoint
Server (MOSS) site.
3)Other blog service: Choose this option if your blog is hosted by a different site.
If you don’t have a blog already, you can use the wizard to set up one at Windows Live. That’s the
option I focus on in this section. If you already have a blog site, all you need to do is enter the blog
site URL in the wizard and provide login credentials when prompted

opera has come with a new version with opera 11, although it  is beta version lets look at its contents and new things from opera website.

Eleven new reasons to love Opera 11

1. Tab stacking

Opera pioneered powerful tabs. In Opera 11, tab stacking lets you drag one tab over another to create a group. Now, you can keep dozens of webpages open, organized and under control.

2. A safer address field

Opera’s new address field hides the complexity of long web addresses and gives you better control of your security when browsing. Click on the badge for the website to see information about the site you are visiting. You can even get information about Opera Turbo data savings.

3. Extensions support

You can now browse Opera’sextensions catalog to add new functionality easily and customize Opera just how you want it.

4. Visual mouse gestures

Mouse gestures are another Opera innovation that has been made easier-to-use with the addition of an interface that guides you. This allows new users to discover the speed and power that mouse gestures offer.

5. Better performance

Our developers have been hard at work fine-tuning our browser engine to put Opera even further ahead in a number of benchmarks. In Opera 11, pages load faster and complex applications run more smoothly.

6. Enhanced HTML5 support

Support for new standards and HTML5 technologies means that rich, dynamic web applications and multiplayer games can be supported by Opera 11.

7. Extended auto-update

A new auto-update system ensures that your extensions and Opera Unite apps are always up to date with the latest enhancements.

8. Search predictions from Google

Search suggestions predict queries as you type, making searching quicker and easier. Google search predictions are now built into Opera. When using the search field or searching from the address field with the ‘g’ search keyword, Google search predictions will appear.

9. Plug-ins only on demand

An option has now been added to have plug-ins such as Flash content load only when clicked. This is especially helpful to speed up browsing on computers that have difficulty handling lots of plug-in content.

10. Enhanced email in your browser

A new mail panel gives you control over the order in which your accounts and mail items show up. You can just drag items where you want them. The mail panel can also show your mail panel when you are using it and hide when you leave a mail tab.

11. Faster installation

Even with its many new features, Opera 11 is 30% smaller than Opera 10.60. That means that Opera downloads more quickly and installs in fewer steps. Getting Opera on your computer is easier than ever.

Blogger Buzz: Safe Browsing on Blogger

National Cyber-Security Awareness Month is here once again. In that spirit we wanted to share a bit about what we are doing on Blogger to help fight malicious content, along with some tips for a safer browsing experience online. While spammers are always coming up with new tricks, the combination of Blogger’s abuse-fighting systems and the security features of modern browsers helps ensure that you’ll be able to browse through your favorite blog content with confidence.

We’ve partnered with other abuse-fighting teams within Google to develop sophisticated systems for automatically detecting and quarantining nefarious content on Blogspot. Over the years, our teams have analyzed the patterns and behavior of malicious blogs and code, and with each new detection our existing algorithms are trained for better coverage in the future. As a result, we are able to catch and quarantine thousands of malicious blogs each year, and are happy to say that our overall spam levels are at an all-time low across our service.

Of course, while our automated systems provide great coverage for a wide variety of abuse types, you can always let us know about suspicious blogs by reporting them directly to us via our online form. We’re also looking to you, the users, to be our eyes on the web and let us know anything that may have escaped our existing systems.

Beyond partnering with us on the detection process, you can also make a difference in your own online security by taking advantage of your browser’s built-in security. Modern browsers have powerful security features that can detect potentially malicious sites and alert you should you stumble upon them. Using technology like Google’s Safe Browsing tools, users of many browsers see warning screens when attempting to visit sites that automated systems have determined to contain suspicious content. To make sure you have the latest and most secure browser version, please check out the following browser sites:

We also recommend using one of the following tools to keep your browser plug-ins up to date: Google-developed SecBrowsing; Mozilla Plugin Check.

For more tips on safe browsing and security on the web, check out the home of Cyber Security Awareness Month at the http://staysafeonline.org/.
